2013 brought a new tournament to South Florida and the world of soccer. The International Champions Cup Finals comes in at No. 4 on the Top 10 Moments at Sun Life Stadium in 2013.
A crowd of 67,237 were on hand to witness Real Madrid win the inaugural Guinness International Champions Cup trophy, defeating Chelsea by a score of 3-1. Cristiano Ronaldo led the way for Madrid by scoring two goals and earning Man of the Tournament honors
Madrid started the scoring early, when Marcelo found the back of the net during the 14 th minute to gain an early lead. Not to be outdone, Chelsea quickly responded when Ramires evened the score at one at the 17 minute mark.
Ronaldo gave Real Madrid the lead for good when he scored on a remarkable free kick during the 31 st minute. Real Madrid continued the scoring in the second half when Cristiano Ronaldo converted his second goal of the game on a beautiful header.
The vibrant crowd cheered in the waning moments as Real Madrid celebrated their victory, becoming the inaugural winners of the Guinness international Champions Cup.
Earlier in the evening AC Milan earned third place in the tournament after defeating the LA Galaxy by a score of 2 – 0 in the second ever meeting between the two clubs.
Prior to the start of the evening’s matches, thousands of fans gathered to enjoy the International Champions Cup Fan Fest . There, fans were able to participate in interactive soccer games, take photos and greet players as they entered Sun Life Stadium in the player parade.
